Rajasthan Man Beaten To Death, Relatives Blame Forest Officials

A tree-feller allegedly died after his vehicle was stopped and he was beaten by a group of people in Rajasthan's Alwar district late Thursday night, said police.

The family of the victim, Wasim, has accused forest personnel of thrashing him to death but the cops are yet to ascertain the facts.

Wasim, 27, allegedly used to cut trees in forest areas and send the woods to Haryana without informing the forest department, police said.

He was travelling through Narol village with two others when a group of people stopped his pickup vehicle and thrashed them.

On information, the cops reached Narol village but the attackers had fled by then. They took the injured to a local hospital and Wasim was referred to Kotpuli Hospital where he died due to his injuries, said police.

The victim's relatives, however, had another version surrounding the incident.

Wasim's cousin Asif said they had gone to Rampur village to cut a tree after striking a deal with its owner. He said they were told a forest outpost was nearby and they might be penalised for it, so they left without the wood.

A forest department vehicle had followed them when they were returning and used a JCB vehicle to stop them, their grandfather added. He alleged the three men were then beaten with sticks by seven-eight people.

A case has been registered and five people detained in this connection, reportedly some forest personnel too. A JCB vehicle and a jeep have been seized as well.

An investigation is on into the alleged role of forest department personnel in the incident, said police.

Rohit To Attend BCCI's Meeting In Delhi To Select Asia Cup Squad: Report

The men's senior selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), led by Ajit Agarkar, will meet in New Delhi on Monday to discuss the Asia Cup squad. Indian captain Rohit Sharma will also attend the meeting. India's team has yet to announce their squad for Asia Cup and World Cup amid concerns over the injury of their key players, while nations like Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh have already named their Asia Cup squads. England and Australia have also announced the provisional squad for the World Cup 2023.

It will be interesting to see if India selects 15 players or selects a few more since all of these extended squads contain more than 15 players.

India's three key players Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer suffered injuries that kept them out of the action. Although, Bumrah has made his comeback in the three-match series against Ireland where he is leading the side. The selector would have an eye on the fitting of Bumrah in the ongoing series.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president, Jay Shah, on July 19 announced the schedule for the Asia Cup 2023. The tournament will kick off on August 30, with arch-rivals India and Pakistan set to lock horns in Kandy, Sri Lanka, on September 2.

The tournament will follow a hybrid model, with four matches to be hosted by Pakistan and all of India's matches and a total of nine fixtures taking place in the Emerald Isle, Sri Lanka. India is in Group A, which also has Pakistan and Nepal, while Group B comprises Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan.

The tournament will kick off with a clash between Pakistan and Nepal in Multan, Pakistan. India will start their campaign against Pakistan on September 2, in Kandy. They will be playing their second group stage match at the same venue against Nepal on September 4.

Matches in the Super Four stage will start on September 6, with a clash between the A1 and B2 sides in the respective groups, at Lahore. The rest of the matches will take place in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

On September 17, the final will be held in Colombo.

The tournament will be held in a 50-over format, keeping in mind the ICC Cricket World Cup, which will be hosted in India from October 5 to November 19.

Sri Lanka are the defending Asia Cup champions, having won the title last year. They have won a total of six titles. India has been the most successful team in the tournament's history, with a total of 7 titles.

Bhagwant Mann Rescues Stranded Family In Punjab's Flooded City

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann rescued a family stranded on the roof of their house in a flooded residential area in Hoshiarpur.

Mr Mann had been surveying the flood situation when he spotted the family, sitting on the roof of a submerged house.

Officials said the Chief Minister, who was on an inflatable boat, told the rescuers to row towards the family and let them sit on the boat.

"Floods have struck again in Punjab. I visited flood-affected areas in Hoshiarpur and spoke to the locals. The times are tough, but we will help everyone. The government will compensate the losses of the people," Mr Mann tweeted.

Several teams of the National Disaster Response Force, the army and the Border Security Force have been pressed into service for rescue operations in flood-hit areas of Punjab's Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur and Rupnagar districts.

Large parts of these three districts have been flooded following the release of excess water from the Bhakra and the Pong dams, officials said.

The water level in the Beas and Sutlej rivers rose following the release of water from reservoirs.

The Bhakra dam on the Sutlej river and the Pong dam on the Beas river -- both in Himachal Pradesh -- are seeing high water level after heavy rain in their catchment areas.

Several people in low-lying regions and villages on the banks of the rivers in Punjab were evacuated to safety. The district administrations also asked the people in the flood-hit areas to move to safer locations.

In Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, BJP Covers Backward Community Seats First

The BJP has released the first list of candidates for Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh assembly elections, in which 21 names have been announced from the first and 39 from the second. A chunk of names names are for the seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes -- a voter group the BJP has been trying hard to break into. Most of the seats are occupied by the Congress and the early announcement is expected to give the candidates more time to work on drumming up support.

The seats include six of 34 seats in the Gwalior-Chambal zone. There are 14 faces who lost the elections in 2018, including 7 former ministers -- Achal Sonkar, Nanaji Mohad, Omprakash Dhurve, Aidal Singh Kansana, Nirmala Bhuria, Lalita Yadav, and Lal Singh Arya.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan congratulated the candidates. "Fulfill the trust that the party has reposed on all of you and emerge victorious, best wishes," his tweet read.

On the Gohad reserve seat, the BJP has given ticket to Scheduled Caste Morcha national president Lal Singh Arya instead of Jyotiraditya Scindia loyalist Ranveer Jatav. Mr Singh is seen as the stronger candidate locally -- being a former minister, and the party's national in-charge of the SC Morcha.

In 2018, Congress's Ranveer Jatav won by defeating Mr Arya, and later joined the BJP with Mr Scindia. But he lost the 2020 by-election, after which the party made him the chairman of the Handcrafts Development Corporation and gave him the status of a cabinet minister but cut off the ticket.

The BJP list, though, includes many names that have been embroiled in controversies. The list includes Dhruv Narayan Singh, the candidate for the Bhopal Central Assembly. Dhruv Narayan Singh was a suspect in the murder of RTI activist Shehla Masood. Two days ago, the relatives of Shehla Masood demanded a re-inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the matter.

Pritam Singh Lodhi has been made the candidate from Pichor assembly seat in Shivpuri district. Pichor is the invincible fort of KP Singh "Kakkaju" of the Congress.

A few months ago, the party suspended Pritam Singh Lodhi over his statement about Brahmins. This is the third time Pritam Singh Lodhi will go toe-to-toe against "Kakkaju".

A few candidates are also members of political families -- Sarla Rawat, daughter-in-law of former Sabalgarh MLA Meharban Singh Rawat, Virendra Singh Lodhi, the son of former Damoh MP Shivraj Singh Lodhi, Neeraj Singh, son of ex-MLA Pratibha Singh.

Mr Lodhi has been nominated from the Banda assembly seat in Sagar, which has around 50,000 voters belonging to the Lodhi community. Currently Congress's Tarwar Singh Lodhi is the MLA from Banda.

Kamakhya Pratap Singh, son of ex-MLA Manvendra Singh, has got the ticket from Maharajpur in Chhatarpur district.

Watch: KKR Star Recreates Viral Video Of Non-strike Batter Irritating Bowler

The social media is a gold-mine of content. Some of them are funny to the core. While there are several negative side of social media, sometimes it can throw gems which can lift the mood. One such video which has gone viral is that of Kolkata Knight Riders star Venkatesh Iyer. Iyer has been quite impressive in the Indian Premier League, but this time he took the cake with his acting skills. He recreated a video where he cane be seen at the non-striker's end at an indoor training facility. As the bowler is about to bowl, Iyer runs towards the striker and discuss field placements. A similar kind of meme video went viral recently.

In a recent conversation, Venkatesh recalled playing against Dhoni's CSK, and how the former India captain's innovative field setup led to his downfall.

"I and one more guy was batting. There were two fielders on the off-side - a short third man and covers. Everything was fine before he just called a fielder and placed it the other side. The very next ball went the exact same way and he was out caught. He could have had some bad luck too but I was wondering 'Why did it have to be off the very next ball? It could have happened 3-4 deliveries later, right?' Suddenly it felt 'Oh man! What a mind this guy has'," Venkatesh said on Raj Shaman's podcast.

The 28-year-old further revealed that he was left shellshocked by his dismissal, and had to confront Dhoni after the match to ask him about the reason behind his decision.

"Just this year, I was batting and I played a shot and got out at short third man. I turned around and saw 'He is standing wrong. That's not where a fielder stands. He is standing at a wrong position; he should be more to the right. Then I realised 'Oh'. I asked him after the match, 'Bhaiyya, kyu?' (Why?) He said the way the ball was leaving my bat; the fielders should be a lot fine. Then I was like 'WOW! I never even thought like that. To think so quickly then and there, and to understand the angle - cricket is all about angles - to read it is I think his biggest strength," the all-rounder concluded.

"Deeply Concerned": US On Mob Attacks On Churches In Pakistan

The United States on Wednesday voiced alarm and urged Pakistan to investigate mob attacks against churches and Christian homes following rumors of blasphemy of Islam.

Hundreds of Muslim men attacked a predominantly Christian area on the outskirts of the eastern industrial city of Faisalabad on Wednesday, setting fire to churches.

"We are deeply concerned that churches and homes were targeted in response to reported Koran desecration in Pakistan," State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters.

He said that while the United States backed free expression, "violence or the threat of violence is never an acceptable form of expression."

"We urge Pakistani authorities to conduct a full investigation into these allegations and call for calm," he said.

Blasphemy is a sensitive issue in Muslim-majority Pakistan, where anyone deemed to have insulted Islam or Islamic figures can face the death penalty.

Critics say that rumors of insults to Islam are often fanned as a way to settle scores against non-Muslims.

The anti-Christian violence is the latest unrest in the world's fifth-most populous country, where on Monday a little-known senator, Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, was sworn in as caretaker prime minister to see through elections.

Secretary of State Antony Blinker offered congratulations to Kakar in a posting on Twitter, which has been rebranded as X.

"As Pakistan prepares for free and fair elections, in accordance with its constitution and the rights to freedom of speech and assembly, we will continue to advance our shared commitment to economic prosperity," Blinken said.

Pakistan has been wracked by instability after Imran Khan, the country's most popular politician, was removed as prime minister and more recently jailed on corruption charges that his supporters call an attempt to bar him from office.

Khan has accused the United States of working to oust him, claims strongly denied by Washington, which says that it had policy disagreements.

AI Tool Can Steal Passwords From Keystroke Sounds: Study

A new study has revealed that entering your computer password while on a Zoom call could put you at risk for a cyberattack because hackers can now 'listen' to your keystrokes to steal your credentials using an artificial intelligence (AI) tool.

The study said that AI has the capability to identify the specific keys being pressed by listening to the typing sounds.

In a paper published on August 3, researchers emphasised that with the increasing adoption of video conferencing platforms like Zoom and the widespread availability of devices equipped with microphones, the risk of sound-based cyberattacks has increased. The AI tool studied by the researchers showed the capacity to accurately decipher text, including passwords, from keystroke sounds, achieving a precision level exceeding 90%.

Researchers from Durham, Surrey, and Royal Holloway universities were involved in the study and illustrated that microphones can identify distinct typing patterns. This revelation implies that people using laptops in public settings might be at risk of having their typing captured and subsequently deciphered.

The team of researchers reached this conclusion after undertaking the task of training an AI model.

They achieved this by pressing each of the 36 keys on a MacBook Pro 25 times while recording the accompanying sounds. Subsequently, they fed this sound data into the AI model, enabling it to accurately recognize the unique pattern associated with each key.

The researchers' AI model exhibited a remarkable accuracy rate of 93% in interpreting keystrokes from recorded MacBook typing sounds conducted via the Zoom video conferencing software. Additionally, the accuracy rate increased to 95% when the keystrokes were captured using an iPhone 13 mini.

Inside Indian Syrup-Linked Deaths Trial In Uzbekistan: A Bribery Angle

Distributors of a contaminated Indian cough syrup that killed 65 children in Uzbekistan paid local officials a bribe of $33,000 to skip mandatory testing, Uzbek state prosecutors alleged during a trial on Wednesday.

The Central Asian nation put 21 people on trial - 20 of whom are Uzbeks and one Indian - over the deaths last week, making public for the first time a much higher death count than previously reported.

Three of the defendants (an Indian and two Uzbekistan nationals) are executives of Quramax Medical, a company that sold medicines produced by India's Marion Biotech, in Uzbekistan.

According to state prosecutor Saidkarim Akilov, Quramax CEO Singh Raghvendra Pratar, allegedly paid officials at the state centre for expertise and standardization of medicinal products $33,000 so that they would skip a mandatory inspection of its products.

It was unclear from the prosecutor's statement whether the inspection was supposed to involve tests in Uzbekistan, or a request for tests to be carried out by the producer in India.

Pratar, who spoke in court, denied the charges but admitted to handing over the sum to officials through an intermediary as a "token of appreciation". He said he had no idea how and by whom that money was used later.

Seven of the 21 defendants pleaded guilty to at least some of the charges against them, which included tax evasion, sale of substandard or counterfeit medicines, abuse of office, negligence, forgery, and bribery.

Officials have not said why 45 deaths had remained unreported since last year.

State prosecutors also said on Wednesday that Quramax had imported Marion Biotech medicines at an inflated price via two Singapore-based intermediary companies, which prompted tax evasion charges.

Chest Measurement Criterion For Women For Any Post "Outrageous": Court

The Rajasthan High Court has denounced the criterion of chest measurement to gauge the lung capacity of female candidates during physical examination in recruitment process for foresters "or any other post", saying it is absolutely arbitrary and outrageous and dents a woman's dignity.

It also directed the state authorities to seek opinions of experts to explore the possibility of any alternative means to determine the desired level of lung capacity "to avoid this unwarranted humiliation of women candidates".

Justice Dinesh Mehta made the observation while deciding a petition by three female candidates challenging their disqualification on the parameter of chest measurement despite clearing the Physical Efficiency Test for the post of Forest Guard.

The court preferred not to intervene in the recruitment process, which had already taken place, but stated “some deliberation is necessary about the very requirement of chest measurement for the female candidates, may it be for the recruitment of Forest Guard or Forester or any other post”.

The size of the chest and its expansion in the case of a female candidate may not necessarily be a pointer of physical fitness and a litmus test of the lungs' capacity, the judge observed in the August 10 order.

"Even if it be so, such measurement impinges upon or intrudes on the privacy of a female. Apart from being irrational, prescribing such criterion disrupts the dignity, bodily autonomy and mental integrity of a woman”, the court stated in its order.

The court observed that the criterion is absolutely arbitrary and outrageous and a clear dent on a woman's dignity and right to privacy guaranteed under Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution of India.

The petitioners have told the court that their measurement was more than required after which the high court sought a report from the medical board of AIIMS.

The report, however, stated that two candidates' chest measurements were less than required in the "normal condition" while one of them had chest measurement less than required in the "expanded condition".

Based on this report, the court rejected their petitions and upheld the decision of the recruiting agency to disqualify them, but objected to the use of chest measurement among female candidates.

A copy of the order was marked to the state chief secretary, the secretary of the forest department and the secretary of the department of personnel to have a relook into this criterion.

It asked them to solicit the opinion of experts to explore the possibility of alternative means to determine the desired level of lung capacity.

Uri Publicly Screened In Manipur Over 20 Years Since Insurgents' Bollywood Ban

Cinema returned to strife-torn Manipur on Tuesday after more than 20 years when a Bollywood movie on surgical strikes against Pakistan was screened at a makeshift open air theatre in Churachandpur.

Vicky Kaushal-starrer "Uri: The Surgical Strike" was attended by a large number of people at Rengkai (Lamka).

The screening was organised by the Hmar Students Association (HSA) to express its opposition to the ban on Hindi movies imposed in September 2000 by 'Revolutionary People's Front', a political wing of the proscribed People's Liberation Army, a valley-based Meitei terror group.

"It has been over two decades since a movie was screened in our town. The Meiteis have banned Hindi movies for a long long time.

"Today's move is to defy the anti-national policies of the Meitei groups and to show our love for India," Ginza Vualzong, spokesperson of Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum, said in a brief statement.

The organisation describes itself as the voice of Kuki tribes.

Before the screening of the movie, the national anthem was played at the open air theatre, located 63 km from the capital city.

Manipur has been witnessing widespread ethnic clashes between majority Meitei and tribal Kuki communities since May 3 and so far over 160 people have been killed.

On Monday, the HSA said the screening is to show "our defiance and opposition to terror groups which have subjugated the tribals for decades".

"Join us in taking a pledge to continue our fight for freedom and justice," it appealed.

The HSA said the last Hindi film that was publicly screened in Manipur was "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" in 1998.

Officials said that within a week of the ban in 2000, rebels had burnt 6,000 to 8,000 video and audio cassettes and compact discs in Hindi collected from outlets in the state.

Though the RPF gave no reason for the ban in the northeastern state, cable operators said the militant group feared negative impact of Bollywood on the state's language and culture.

After Boyfriend Walks Out, Angry Woman Kills His Son: Delhi Police

A woman has been arrested in a case involving the murder of an 11-year-old boy in west Delhi. The police said Puja Kumari, 24, has confessed to killing Divyansh, considering him an obstruction to her marriage with his father.

Puja Kumari had an affair with the boy's father Jitendra and the two had started living together in 2019. But three years later, the man went back to his wife and son.

This, the police said, had triggered Puja's temper.

On August 10, she asked a common friend to provide the address of Jitendra's house in Inderpuri.

When she finally reached the house, she found the door open, and the boy sleeping on the bed. There was no one in the house.

In a statement, the police said the woman strangled the boy as he slept and concealed the body inside the box bed after taking out clothes packed in it.

The West Delhi police managed to identify the woman with the help of footage from CCTV cameras. But then came the task of finding her. Inquiries at home led nowhere since she was no longer staying with her parents.

The police then started tracking footage from nearly 300 CCTV cameras across Inderpuri and its neighbouring areas -- Ranhola, Nihal Vihar and Rishal Garden on Najafgarh-Nangloi road.

They realised that she was still in the area, but was changing her hideouts frequently, the police said in a statement.

The police  managed to arrest the woman after three days.

Drunk US Tourists Found Sleeping Atop Eiffel Tower After Evading Security

Two drunken American tourists were discovered sleeping atop Paris' iconic Eiffel Tower on Monday, after dodging security the night before, Sky News reported. The inebriated tourists were woken up early Monday morning by security guards as they were making their rounds before the landmark's 9:00 am opening time.

The publicly-owned operator of the Eiffel Tower, Sete, stated that the individuals had likely become stranded due to their intoxication levels.

They "appear to have got stuck because of how drunk they were", Paris prosecutors told AFP.

As per the report, the inebriated Americans had spent their night under the stars in a spot normally closed to the public between the tower's second and third levels, but "did not pose any apparent threat".

Notably, the duo purchased tickets for entry at around 10:40 pm on Sunday but jumped over security barriers while making their way down from the top. A team of firefighters, including specialists skilled in rescuing individuals from dangerous heights, was dispatched to safely retrieve the trespassers.

Both men were taken to a Paris police station for questioning, while Sete said it would file a criminal complaint. As a result of the misadventure,  the opening of the tower to the public was delayed by approximately an hour on Monday morning.

Earlier on Saturday, a security alert prompted the evacuation of three floors of the Eiffel Tower. SETE said bomb disposal experts as well as police were scouring the area, including a restaurant located on one of the floors. Visitors were also evacuated from both the three floors and the square under the monument shortly after 1:30 pm (1130 GMT).

The magnificent Eiffel Tower, known as "la dame de fer" (Iron Lady in French), is 330 meters (1,083 feet) tall and is the tallest structure in Paris. The tower, France's most emblematic symbol, drew 6.2 million visitors last year.

Construction work on the tower began in January 1887 and was finished on March 31, 1889.

"Whenever I Went To England...": Ashwin's Take On Shaw's County Exploits

India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was all praise for young batter Prithvi Shaw amid his stellar performances with the bat in England's domestic ODI Cup. Shaw, who joined Northamptonshire in a bid to relaunch his India career, has scored 429 runs at an average of 143 so far, smashing a double century and a double ton in his first four outings. He leads the batting charts in the tournament, ahead of compatriot Cheteshwar Pujara, who has also been sidenlined from the team due to a string of low scores.

Ashwin feels that the out-of-favour batter, who has played just five Tests, six ODIs and one T20I, has already seen a lots of ups and downs in his career, and it is nice to see the young batter regain his confidence.

"Prithvi Shaw scored a double-hundred in their domestic one-day tournament in England for Northanmptonshire. I saw the boundary snippets from his knock. It looked really good and that was an exceptional knock. We all know Prithvi Shaw's extraordinary bat swing and he is an outstandingly talented player... I am really happy for someone like Prithvi Shaw because he has seen plenty of ups and downs in his short career so far," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Recalling his stint in the English county, Ashwin explained that Shaw will learn a lot of things, not just in terms of cricket.

"So, for someone like him (Shaw), away from home in England, seeing new players will be a breath of fresh air for him. I felt that way whenever I went to England and played county cricket. So, he will get that too. He will have plenty of learnings about his life, work ethic, cricket, and whatnot. Because he will be in a position to teach a few youngsters in England as well. Even that can transform your cricket. So, I am extremely delighted for Prithvi Shaw," he further explained.

Kamal Nath Explains Why He Has Written To Lord Mahakal

Madhya Pradesh Congress president Kamal Nath has sought the divine intervention of Lord Mahakal to free the state from the "50 per cent cut rule".

Kamal Nath on Monday took darshan at the famous Mahakaleshwar temple, one of 12 jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, in Ujjain. The Congress leader said he has written a letter to the deity.

"I request you on behalf of all the people who are suffering that my Madhya Pradesh is drowning in the swamp of corruption. No one remains unaffected by scams committed by the '50 per cent cut rule of Bhrashtachar Ki Janani Party'," reads the letter posted on X account.

The letter implored Lord Mahakal to "rid people from this corrupt rule, punish criminals. and ensure the welfare of all".

The former chief minister stated a "scam" happened even in the development of the Mahakal Lok corridor in Ujjain, the abode of Lord Mahakal.

"The corruption spread from the nutritious food scheme for pregnant women to the construction of Mahakal Lok...Those who raise their voice against this tyranny are slapped with false cases and tortured in every way," the letter stated.

Talking to reporters later, Kamal Nath said he offered prayers to Lord Mahakal to end the corrupt rule.

He also exuded confidence that Congress will win the Assembly elections, due later this year, and the first cabinet meeting will be held in Ujjain.

Notably, Indore Police last week registered an FIR against "handlers" of the X accounts of Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Kamal Nath, and former Union minister Arun Yadav over the "50% commission government" posts.

Responding to Mr Nath's barbs at the MP government, state BJP spokesman Pankaj Chaturvedi claimed Rs 9 crore cash was found from an associate of Kamal Nath and a case is pending before the Election Commission of India (ECI).

"Nath's name figured in the AgustaWestland scam, Tughlaq Road Hawala case, anti-Sikh riots and several other scams. Such a person, whose life is mired in corruption and leaders of whose party are out on bail, made a request at the pious place like Mahakaleshwar temple based on a forged and fake letter," Pankaj Chaturvedi said.

On Friday, Gandhi Vadra claimed on X that a union of contractors from Madhya Pradesh has written a letter to the Chief Justice of the High Court complaining their payment is released only after paying 50 per cent commission.

Indore Police Commissioner had said that local BJP's legal cell convenor Nimesh Pathak complained that a fake letter bearing the name of a person called Gyanendra Awasthi was circulated on social media.

"The corrupt BJP government in Karnataka used to collect 40% commission. In Madhya Pradesh, the BJP has gone ahead by breaking its own record of corruption. People of Karnataka ousted the 40% commission government, now the people of Madhya Pradesh will remove the 50% commission government from power," Priyanka Gandhi Vadra alleged in the post.

Stokes Set To Come Out Of Retirement For World Cup, Could Skip IPL: Report

England Test captain and the world's premier all-rounder Ben Stokes is all set to come out of retirement and play the ODI World Cup in India even if it comes at the cost of missing a season of cash-rich IPL, according to British daily 'The Telegraph'. According to a report in the leading English newspaper, "Ben Stokes is prepared to make a sensational U-Turn and reverse his one day international retirement to help England's World Cup defence in India this year, even if it means missing out on next season's Indian Premier League."

"The England Test captain now appears willing to play World Cup if he is asked by white-ball captain Jos Buttler," the paper further reported.

The reason why Stokes could give his Rs 16 crore annual IPL deal with CSK a miss, is the five-Test series against India that will start on January 25 and end on March 11.

If Stokes plays two months of IPL till the end of May, then he would be spending close to five months in India, which might not be feasible for him.

At some point, he is expected to undergo a knee surgery and the IPL window seems the best time considering he can return to competitive cricket and continue leading England in years to come.

"While concern lingers over Stokes's knee which might require operation at some stage, Telegraph Sport understands that he would be prepared to miss next season's IPL if he needed a gap in his schedule to help him recover."

England start their campaign on October 5 in Ahmedabad against New Zealand and the 32-year-old Stokes, who has played 105 ODIs for his country before retiring from the format last year, might just come out for one tournament to help Buttler's side regain the trophy it won in 2019. Stokes was Player of the Final in the last edition at home.

The report also states that if need be, Stokes will play as a specialist batter in the middle order.

"Stokes is likely to bat in the middle order for England ODI side. Amid fears of how much bowling he could do, England are prepared to pick him as specialist batsman, replicating the role he performed at stages during this summer's Ashes series," the report stated.

"I Like To Captain How...": Hardik Makes Honest Leadership Confession

After being 0-2 down in the 5-match T20I series against West Indies, Hardik Pandya's Indian team bounced back to win the next two matches in convincing fashion, making it 2-2, with just the 5th and the final match to go. After the West Indies leg of the series, both the teams arrived in the United States of America where Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal stole th show with the bat. India skipper Hardik opened up on the dramatic turnaround in the team's fortunes, explaining his style of leadership.

For Pandya it was just the beginning and urged the batters to be ready for bigger situations.

"Gill and Jaiswal were brilliant. There is no doubt over their skillset. They just needed to spend some time between the wickets. Going forward we have to take more responsibility as a batting group and support the bowlers. I've always believed bowlers win matches," said Pandya after the match.

India were trailing 0-2 after the first two matches, but won the third and fourth games to roar back into the series.

Pandya was understandably elated by the team's effort.

"We lost two games but in the first game it was our own errors. We were cruising and in the last four overs we slipped. We spoke about how these kinds of games show our character.

"The boys took it (defeats) in their stride. The two games (after the first two defeats) we played reflected that we pulled up our socks and played some good cricket,” he added.

Jaiswal, who struck an unbeaten 84 off 51 balls, was adjudged man of the match, and the left-hander said he batted as per the team's needs.

West Indies captain Rovman Powell said batsmen need to stick to their plans and play India spinners better.

"We didn't stick to our plans. We always knew this series would come down to how we play against spinners (of India)," said Powell.

Kate Winslet's Iconic Overcoat From 'Titanic' To Be Sold At Auction

An overcoat worn by Hollywood actress Kate Winslet in the superhit movie 'Titanic' is up for auction and is expected to fetch more than $100,000, as per a report in the New York Post. The actress donned the floor-length overcoat in the sinking sequences of the 1997 movie, including the scene when her character Rose frees Leonardo DiCaprio's character Jack, who was restrained to a pole on the flooded E-deck.

Ken Goldin, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the auction house Goldin stated that "it's definitely a six-figure piece". "It's going to go for $100,000 plus," he told the Post. As per the auctioneer, five individuals have already made offers as of Friday night, with the highest being $34,000.

Interestingly, the coat still has water stains which occurred during the filming. Deborah Lynn Scott, who won the Oscar for Best Costume Design for her work on the James Cameron movie, created the pink wool overcoat with black embroidery.

"This floor-length wool overcoat worn by Rose during those frantic moments as she navigates the sinking ship while rescuing Jack bears visible water stains on the inside and across the interior silk. Intricate embroidery in black appears alongside floral embroidery that gives the coat dynamic bespoke realism aligned with the fashion of the times," the auction house said on its website.

This elaborate outfit is part of Goldin 100, one of the auction house's most exclusive sales, with artefacts valued at $100,000 or more.

The auction house thinks that the buyer might be "any movie memorabilia and pop culture collector" or a "person who maybe never collects, but is a huge fan of the movie." "It is an overcoat, so possibly somebody may want it to give it to their wife to show off and wear and say, 'This is the coat that Kate Winslet wore'," Mr Goldin told the outlet.

Death Count In US' Hawaii Wildfires Rises To 67

The death toll from the devastating wildfires in Hawaii has climbed to 67, CNN reported citing the Maui County government.

The government in the statement said, "The Lahaina fire is not yet contained." Earlier, Hawaii Governor Josh Green said that the death toll from the wildfires on the island of Maui in Hawaii reaches 59.

Speaking to CNN, Green said that all those deaths occurred in the open and not in buildings, "as people were trying to escape the fire." He said that there will be more fatalities. Josh Green said, "Without a doubt, there will be more fatalities. We do not know, ultimately, how many will have occurred."

Hawaii's Governor ordered a comprehensive review of the state's actions in the hours after the wildfires erupted on the islands, earlier this week, including why warning sirens were not utilised to alert people on Maui.

Speaking to CNN, Green said, "I authorized a comprehensive review this morning, to make sure that we know exactly what happened and when."

He said that the emergency officials particularly faced challenges as the flames burning near Lahaina, which ultimately turned into a firestorm that razed nearly all of the historic town had died down for sometime before suddenly reigniting, and firefighters had shifted their focus to other areas on the island.

"The telecommunications were destroyed very rapidly" at that point, Green said, meaning that the tight-knit community was unable to alert one another by phone, as they typically do when there is an emergency. "That communication was cut off," the governor said.

Green said he is not going to "make any excuse for anyone." However, the multiple fires burning at once had caused a "very fluid situation across the islands." He said that despite those challenges, they will do everything that can to find out to protect the people.

US President Joe Biden spoke with Hawaii Governor Josh Green on Friday after the latter completed a survey of destruction across Maui.

White House in a statement said, "The Governor provided the President with a firsthand update and assessment of Hawaii's latest needs, and thanked the President for the support of FEMA and other federal agencies," CNN reported.

On Thursday, US President Joe Biden declared Hawaii wildfires a "major disaster" and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the areas impacted by the wildfires since August 8. Biden's action makes federal funding available to impacted people in Maui County.

A White House statement said, "Today, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Hawaii and ordered Federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by wildfires beginning on August 8, 2023, and continuing."

The assistance announced by Biden includes grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses and other programs to help people and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster, according to the White House statement.

"Don't See Samson In WC If...": Ex-India Star's Honest Take On Batter

Former India batter Aakash Chopra has raised doubts over Sanju Samson's place in the squad for the World Cup. Samson, who is currently with the Indian team in West Indies, smashed a fifty during the third ODI against West Indies earlier this month. Chopra feels that Samson's participation in the World Cup will depend on KL Rahul's fitness. Rahul is currently undergoing rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Rahul, alongwith Shreyas Iyer, will be given plenty of time to prove their fitness.

"At this point in time, if KL Rahul becomes available, I don't see him [Samson] in the World Cup team. I don't think he will be seen in the Asia Cup team as well," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

Chopra, however, stressed on the fact that Samson is only 28, and that he'll have plenty of opportunities to showcase his talent in the future.

"Samson is only 28 years old. He does have time on his side. It's not the end of the world. You have the T20 World Cup next year. Plenty of cricket will be played after that too," he added.

Earlier, Chopra had urged Samson not to waste the opportunities given to him.

"Sanju Samson - don't waste your chance. If you waste your chance, you will remember it later. It is not that if Ishan Kishan goes from the top, Sanju cannot go from below. Both can go and Jitesh Sharma can come," Chopra had on his YouTube channel.

India will open its World Cup campaign on October 8 against Australia in Chennai.

Death Count In US' Hawaii Wildfire Rises To 53: Officials

The death count from a terrifying wildfire that razed a historic Hawaiian town hit 53 Thursday, making it one of the deadliest disasters to strike the islands since they became a US state.

Brushfires on the west coast of Hawaii's Maui island -- fueled by high winds from a nearby hurricane -- broke out Tuesday and rapidly engulfed the seaside town of Lahaina.

The flames moved so quickly that many were caught off-guard, trapped in the streets or jumping into the ocean in a desperate bid to escape.

"In 1960 we had 61 fatalities when a large wave came through Big Island," Governor Josh Green said, referring to a tragedy that struck a year after Hawaii became the 50th US state.

"This time, it's very likely that our death totals will significantly exceed that."

Officials in Maui County said Thursday the confirmed number of dead now stood at 53, and firefighters were still battling the blaze.

Lahaina on Thursday lay in charred, smoking ruins, with Green saying 80 percent of the town was gone.

"There is no doubt everyone would describe this as though a bomb hit Lahaina," he said. "It looks like total devastation; buildings that we've all enjoyed and celebrated together for decades, for generations, are completely destroyed."

President Joe Biden on Thursday declared the fires a "major disaster" and unblocked federal aid for relief efforts, as residents said they needed more help in a recovery that could take years.

Bodies

US Coast Guard commander Aja Kirksey told CNN around 100 people were believed to have jumped into the water in a desperate effort to flee the fast-moving flames as they tore through Lahaina.

Kirksey said helicopter pilots struggled to see because of the dense smoke pouring from the huge fire, but that a Coast Guard vessel had been able to rescue more than 50 people from the water.

"It was a really rapidly developing scene and pretty harrowing for the victims that had to jump into the water," she added.

For resident Kekoa Lansford, the horror was far from over.

"We still get dead bodies in the water floating and on the seawall," Lansford told CBS.

"We have been pulling people out... We're trying to save people's lives, and I feel like we are not getting the help we need."

Aerial photographs of Lahaina, which served as the Hawaiian kingdom's capital in the early 19th century, showed entire blocks reduced to cinders.

Green said around 1,700 buildings were now believed to have been affected by the blaze.

"With lives lost and properties decimated, we are grieving with each other during this inconsolable time," Maui Mayor Richard Bissen said.

"In the days ahead, we will be stronger as a... community," he added, "as we rebuild with resilience and aloha."

Evacuations

Thousands of people have already been evacuated from Maui, with 1,400 people waiting at the main airport in Kahului overnight, hoping to get out.

Maui County has asked visitors to leave "as soon as possible," and has organized buses to move evacuees from shelters to the airport.

The island hosts around a third of all the visitors who holiday in the state, and their dollars are vital for the local economy.

Fires have also broken out on Hawaii's Big Island, but officials said they were under control on Thursday.

The state's tourism chief Jimmy Tokioka acknowledged the tragedy but reiterated that the "rest of Hawaii is open."

With a hurricane passing to the south of Hawaii, high winds fueled flames that consumed dry vegetation.

Thomas Smith, a professor with the London School of Economics, said that while wildfires are not uncommon in Hawaii, the blazes this year "are burning a greater area than usual, and the fire behavior is extreme, with fast spread rates and large flames."

The Hawaii fires follow other extreme weather events this summer in North America, with record-breaking wildfires still burning across Canada and a major heat wave baking the US southwest.

Europe and parts of Asia have also endured soaring temperatures, with major fires and floods wreaking havoc.

As global temperatures rise over time, heat waves are projected to become more frequent, with increased dryness due to changing rainfall patterns creating ideal conditions for bush or forest fires.

More Nations Including Japan, Few From West, Interested In UPI: RBI

The Reserve Bank on Thursday said the internationalization of the unified payments interface (UPI) system is a work in progress as it works towards linking it with more and more overseas counterparts, including some in the West and Japan.

On February 21, 2023, the RBI announced the first linkage of UPI by integrating it with Singapore's Paynow, paving the way for faster and more transparent remittances between the two countries.

Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das launched the new linkage in association with his Singaporean counterpart Ravi Menon, who is the managing director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

Announcing the third monetary policy review, Governor Shaktikanta Das said the RBI was planning to use artificial intelligence in UPI payments and also to deploy near-field communication (NFC) technology to be used in offline payments in UPI-Lite.

It also enhanced the transaction limit for small-value digital payments to Rs 500 from Rs 200 on UPI Lite.

On UPI linkages with more countries, the deputy governor T Rabi Shankar told reporters that "such integration has already been done with Singapore. And recently we signed an agreement with the UAE's payment system Integrated Payment Platform (IPP) to link UPI with their payment system.

"It is a work in progress and it will happen in the coming months and discussions are underway with a few other countries also for linking their payment systems with ours, including some advanced economies which have evinced interest in linking to UPI," he said.

Governor Das chipped in saying "UPI has now become internationally recognised. I am not saying it myself, but it is recognised very widely, and that it is perhaps the most efficient and advanced payment system in the world.

"At the recent G20 finance ministers and governors meeting, UPI was widely recognised. So this is a work in progress. We are already in discussion with a few other countries and it will happen soon." To a question from a Japanese journalist whether some officials from the world's third-largest economy has contacted RBI for UPI linkage, Shankar answered in the affirmative saying a Japanese minister has contacted us.

"We are happy that a country like Japan which is an advanced economy, is showing interest in the UPI. Currently, it is only at an intention stage as the contact was mostly exploratory level. NPCI is talking to the relevant Japanese agencies," the deputy governor said.

AK Goel, the chairman of the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) said more user-friendly measures for UPI by way of conversational payments in UPI and further promoting the UPI-Lite by facilitating offline transactions using near field communication are expected to widen the coverage of UPI.

Man Who Threatened Joe Biden Killed In FBI Raid

A Utah man who made threats against Joe Biden was shot and killed by FBI agents on Wednesday, just hours before a visit by the US president to the western state.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed that a suspect was killed when special agents tried to serve arrest and search warrants at a residence in Provo, a city south of Salt Lake City.

The bureau declined to identify the slain man, saying an investigation was ongoing, but he was named in a complaint filed by federal prosecutors in Utah as Craig Robertson.

According to the complaint, Robertson, who was in his early 70s and described himself as a "MAGA Trumper," repeatedly threatened Biden and others in posts on social media.

"I hear Biden is coming to Utah," Robertson said in a post this week. "Cleaning the dust off the M24 sniper rifle.

"Welcom (sic), buffoon-in-chief!"

In addition to Biden, the complaint said Robertson had also made threats against Vice President Kamala Harris and US Attorney General Merrick Garland.

"The time is right for a presidential assassination or two," one post said. "First Joe then Kamala!!!"

He had also threatened to shoot Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg, who has filed charges against former president Donald Trump for allegedly paying election-eve hush money to a porn star.

The complaint also included pictures from social media postings by Robertson of his extensive collection of guns, including a semi-automatic rifle he called a "Democrat eradicator."

Biden is currently visiting the western United States and is scheduled to fly later Wednesday from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Salt Lake City.

The US Secret Service, which protects the president, said it is "aware of the FBI investigation involving an individual in Utah who has exhibited threats to a Secret Service protectee" but provided no further details.

Watch: With India Needing 12 Runs, Pandya's Pep-talk Charges Up Tilak

Facing a must-win situation in the third T20I against West Indies on Tuesday, the Indian cricket team came out all guns blazing to register a big victory and keep the series alive. Performances from Tilak Varma, Kuldeep Yadav, Suryakumar Yadav helped India seal the deal. Varma grabbed everyone's attention as he slammed 49* off 37 balls and stitched important stands with Suryakumar (83) and captain Hardik Pandya (20*). Varma has been a great performer in the T20Is for Mumbai Indians as well. His attacking play against the best of bowlers has been widely appreciated.

Player like Ravichandran Ashwin has also hinted that Varma can be an answer to India's contingency plans for the ODI World Cup. "This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don't have enough backups? Because Sanju Samson has performed really well in ODIs. But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) is the only left-handed batter in the top 7," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Even Pandya is also appreciative of  Varma's potential. During the third T20I, Pandya could be heard giving pep-talk to Varma, when he was batting on 44 off 32 balls and India needed 12 off 23. "Tereko especially khatam karna hai, rukna hai. Gendo ka fark padta hai (You have to stay there and finish the game. The number of balls faced makes a difference," Hardik Pandya was heard saying in the stump-mic.

Meanwhile, the Indian opening duo of Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan achieved career-best rankings in the latest ODI list released on Wednesday, less than two months from the start of the 50-over World Cup in the country. Gill climbed two spots to be fifth overall and be within touching distance of Pakistani trio of Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq.

While Pakistan skipper Babar remains well in front, Gill rose to 743 rating points on the back of his excellent series against the West Indies and has third-placed Zaman (755) and fourth-placed Imam-ul-Haq (745) well within his sight.

Kishan too earned a new career-best rating after jumping nine places to 36th overall, while Hardik Pandya improved 10 places to be placed 71st in the batting chart following his efforts against the West Indies.

MPs Turn To Shakespeare, Tagore, Rumi As They Debate No-Trust Motion

From Indian poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar to English great William Shakespeare, Lok Sabha members quoted extensively from literature to put their arguments across as they raised the Manipur issue during a debate on the no-confidence motion against the government over the past two days.

While Shakespeare's Julius Caesar was invoked the most, the members also cited English poets Joha Donne and John Milton's works to buttress their points.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," said Congress's Gaurav Gogoi, quoting American activist Martin Luther King.

Back as MP after months of being disqualified, Rahul Gandhi invoked 13th-century Persian poet Rumi to say that he would speak not from his mind but from his heart.

"My BJP friends," he said, "You need not be afraid because my speech today will not be focussed on us. Rumi said, 'Jo shabd dil se aate hain woh shabd dil mein jaate hain (words spoken from the heart reach the heart)'," he said.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's TR Baalu quoted from Tamil classic Thirukkural which when translated meant, "He who defies righteous order, oversteps limit and enjoys self-aggrandisement gets lost first." The DMK leader in his remarks also invoked Lord Krishna and his teachings. "Lord Krishna advised that you are not killing your friends but evil... I am doing the same. There was no other way but to bring a no-confidence motion to get the presence of the Prime Minister in the House," he said.

Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Ray, a former physics professor, quoted from Shakespeare's Julius Caeser, Rabindranath Tagore, and even metaphysical poet John Donne in his scathing attack on the government.

"But as Brutus said in Julius Caesar, 'Not that I love Modi less, but I love India more'," he said.

In Bengali, he recited one of Rabindranath Tagore's most heartfelt songs which when translated meant: "I shall not fear and I shall not die twice before dying actually." During his speech, the veteran leader also said he would like to remind the House of what Mark Antony said in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.

"I will paraphrase it and say, 'You blocks, you stones, you worse than senseless things! O You hard hearts, cruel men of BJP.' You have no compassion. That is why, you have not gone to Manipur as all the Opposition parties have gone," he said, calling the central government "heartless".

He then went on to quote English poet Donne as he was quoted in Ernest Hemingway. "Each man's death diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind. Therefore, ask me not For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee."

NCP leader Supriya Sule too made use of literary works to explain her stand on the Manipur issue.

"In the epic poem, 'Paradise Lost' by John Milton, the character of Satan displays hubris when he attempts to rebel against God's rule in Heaven, he eventually declares that it is better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven," she said.

Quoting American economist Milton Friedman's emphasis on evaluating policies on the basis of outcomes rather than the intention, Sule said she did not intend to take away from the intention of the government but underlined that it was the outcomes that she had a problem with.

With the Opposition members taking digs at the government using literary aids, BJP MP Heena Gavit too chipped in by quoting Swami Vivekananda, encouraging her partymen to rise and achieve their goals.

"Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is achieved," she said.

Lil Tay was originally from Canada but moved to Los Angeles. She first rose to fame in 2018 after she began posting controversial videos on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube which showed her cussing, flashing stacks of cash and even starting fights.

She amassed a huge social media following of over 3.3 million people on Instagram. However, she hasn't used the app in five years. She was also a rapper who claimed to have started writing music at the age of seven, as per Metro.

In May 2018, Lil Tay talked about her controversial videos in an interview with Good Morning America.

''People think it's funny, I guess, 'cause I'm nine years old and I've accomplished so much. I'm the youngest flexer. I can do anything I like. If they don't believe me, I don't care,” she said.
